BOSTON - Bill Walczak, candidate for mayor of Boston, today released his “Educators for Walczak” supporter list. The list features teachers and educational policy experts who support his “Education Blueprint” for the Boston Public School system and represents educators from both the K-12 and Higher Education systems. The list of 75 supporters of Walczak’s education plan comes ahead of tonight’s Boston Teacher’s Union mayoral candidates forum.
“This election will give the next mayor the political support to dramatically transform the Boston Public Schools and build a lifetime education system which enlists every sector of the city,” said Walczak. “I am proud these educators support my vision for the BPS system.”
Walczak’s Education Blueprint outlines changes that begin at birth and give Bostonians access to lifetime learning. It goes beyond the school improvement litmus test issues of this campaign – expanded charter schools and time in school – and specifically calls for:
- Creating and supporting autonomous schools with accountability as the best-proven strategy to close the achievement gap.
- Focusing on school-based leaders as key players working with teacher and parents to effect change.
- Creating a cross-sector Boston Learning Lab inspired by MIT’s Media Lab to incubate and support innovation in education across the city.
- Expanding access to K1, high quality early childhood education.
- Creating an office to bring volunteer tutors into the school system in an organized way
- Reorganizing and downsizing the district central office, to push much needed resources out to schools
- Connecting health care and education to ensure that children arrive at school age healthy, ready and able to learn
- Creating Career Academies in 11th and 12th grades to build relationships with the business community and prepare students for careers
